Matthew Lloyd
Matthew is the Artistic Director of the Actors Centre and one of the UK's leading freelance directors.

He was previously Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, during which time the venue was awarded Theatre of the Year. Notable productions there included classic revivals like Waiting for Godot with Richard Wilson and Present Laughter with David Threlfall, as well as new plays like the award-winning An Experiment with an Airpump and Dreaming (West End transfer). As Associate Director at Hampstead Theatre, his credits included the multi-award-winning The Fastest Clock in the Universe, as well as a string of celebrated premiers of new work by leading playwrights like Tony Kushner, Stephen Jeffreys and Rona Munro.

Freelance highlights include shows at the Almeida, the Royal Court, Parco Theatre in Tokyo and work Off-Broadway. Most recently he directed the Olivier Award-winning play The Lucky Ones at Hampstead Theatre and A Doll's House and Hedda Gabler at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Alongside his theatrical career, Matthew has developed training and teaching techniques in a variety of contexts. Having won a Double First from Oxford University and a two-year Harkness Fellowship to Harvard and Columbia Universities, he has taught English Literature at Harvard, Drama and Film at MIT, Theatre Design at the Slade School of Fine Art, and Directing and Writing MAs at Central School of Speech and Drama. His workshops at the Actors Centre deal with self-confidence, communication skills, writing, collaborative process and creative authority, as well as with conventional acting skills.

He has a Human Rights Fellowship from the Twenty-First Century Trust and is committed to bringing the benefits of his expertise in live interaction to different arenas: ethical, academic and now corporate. His consultancy specialises in developing the following skills and interactions - pitching and presentation, inspirational leadership, brainstorming and facilitated debate, roleplay and improvisation, creative teamwork.
